LEAVE THE DOOR OPEN

Remember when your Mom would give you sage advice? Nuggets like, all things in moderation, this too will pass, feed the birds and they will sing, youth is wasted on the young, and my personal favorite, end each day with a sweet? Somehow I knew she was right but just could not accept the fact that truly Mother does know best. Now I treasure these memories and wish I could spend those moments appreciating the wise words sprinkled throughout my youth. Fortunately, Ginger & Mary Ann hosts lovely women who although are not our relatives have seen and endured much joy as well as hardship. Today just such a lady spent a small part of her day here. While buying a new top as a pick me up on a dismal January afternoon she encouraged me to "always leave the door open" when raising your children. Whether you are in agreement or not, let that door stay open. She went on to explain how her daughter is now living with her as she processes a new MS diagnosis, and how grateful she was that through their tumultuos relationship she never backed the young woman into a corner. Heading out into the gray drizzle the woman caught my eye and twinkled, remember leave the door open. Just as she left my phone buzzed with a text from my college boy, call me. Whether cyber or virtual, the door is ready and waiting.
